Digital Terrain Modeling

Digital Terrain Modeling is the process of simulating or representing the relief and patterns of a surface with numerical and digital methods. It has always been an integral component to geology related fields such as geomorphology, hydrology, tectonics and oceanography but over the past decade has also become a major component to non geophysical applications such as GIS modeling, surveying and land use planning.

Terrain Models are derived from data represented by digital elevation models (DEMs) and can include shaded relief models, slope and aspect models, perspective scene generation, and drainage basin analysis (and other models).

Precise Point Positioning GPS Processing

Sometimes when doing GPS field work I will often require a way to double check my own GPS Processing work or am sometimes too far from an active control network to tie into. Using Precise Point Positioning (PPP) service in these situations has often come to my aid, especially on jobs in Nunavut or in Northern Ontario
The Canadian Geodetic Service provides a free online global GPS processing service called CSRS-PPP, where you can process files containing RINEX observations from either a single or dual frequency receiver in either static or kinematic modes. The service is free but does require that you sign up to obtain a username and password to gain access.

3D Flood Modeling with LIDAR

The main goal of this project was to generate flood maps and DEMs with better than 30 cm vertical accuracy for the coastal area of southeastern New Brunswick.

Dryden, Ontario

Well yet another stay in the small northern town of Dryden has come around … it is centrally located between Thunder Bay ONT and Winnipeg MB, along the Trans-Canada Highway. It is the home town of NHL super star Chris Pronger and Max the Moose, the town’s mascot, a large cement statue whom stands 18 feet tall and weighs nine tons, found outside the Dryden Information Centre.

Sioux Lookout Ontario

Currently doing a few small LIDAR jobs in the Sioux Lookout area. Sioux Lookout is a town in northern Ontario (about a 4 and half hour drive west from Thunder Bay). It claims to have a population of 5200 and also known locally as the “Hub of the North” (although I see that phrase in other northern towns as well).
